Head of the Clinic: Professor Dan Lucaciu, MD, PhD, member of AAOS, SICOT, EFORT, SOROT The clinic was founded in 1921, by Alexandru Rădulescu (1886-1979), being at that time the only orthopaedic hospital in Romania. The building, initially a nursing home for the blind, was enlarged until 1933; a bomb destroyed in 1944 a part of the building, which was rebuilt later. The clinic had a comprehensive organization, since the opening, in 1921: besides orthopaedic and trauma departments, both for adults and children, it included also ancillary departments, such as kyneto-therapy and prosthetics. Later on, the children's department was moved to another clinic and the prosthetics workshop was transfered to the private sector. The chair of orthopaedics of the University of Medicine was founded in 1914 and is housed by the clinic since 1921. The clinic is a training center for residents not only in orthopedics and traumatology, but also in other fields of surgery. Today, the clinic has 140 beds (16 of them in the ICU), four operation theaters (one of them septic), an outpatient facility, a rehabilitation facility (including kyneto-therapy and massage). In 1998 we had 2297 in-patients, out of which 1631 were treated surgically; we had more than 9000 consultations on an outpatient basis and 12294 consultations on an emergency basis. More than 80% of our cases are represented by skeletal trauma cases, since we are the emergency referral centre for the north-west of the country. The remaining 20% of our cases are orthopaedic cases, including arthroscopy and prosthetics (hip and joint replacement). Since we are permanently in need of sometimes the most basic of medical supplies, donations and aids are welcome.
